La Monumental de la Musica
La Monumental was formerly a bull fighting arena in Catalan, Spain where bull fighting was recently banned. A competition was derived to provide an alternate use for the building. An axis running through the project cuts the facade at two opposite ends creating a pedestrian connection between Plaza Des Les Glorias and Sagrada Familia. A retail belt and cafes on the ground floor attract visitors. A carving strategy is implemented on the seating area and parts of the exterior facade replacing the carved masses with our contemporary massing additions. Some of the masses would extrude from the interior of the circle through the exterior facade overlooking the ring maintaining the theme of centrality. Visitors can enter these masses from three circulation rings placed at different levels located above the gallery area created. There will remain a main seating area on the south side to allow a shaded space during perfomances in the ring.
